You’ve seen people floating around in the water while you’re on the beach, fin-covered feet kicking, and a breathing tube sticking out of the water. You enjoy swimming and love it when you can see your feet in the water. You feel calm and serene when swimming in the ocean. Check, check, check! You have all the qualities you need to get started snorkeling!
It’s easier than it looks – trust me. The fins will help you to propel yourself and a life jacket will keep you afloat, so you don’t have to worry about staying buoyant while looking around. The part that takes the most getting used to – and is the most fun! – is not coming up for air. The snorkel is a tube that extends above the surface of the water that is connected to your mouthpiece, bringing in air with your every breath. All you have to do is keep your mouth around the mouthpiece and breathe in and out. You’ll be wearing a face mask that will cover your eyes and nose, so you won’t make the mistake of inhaling water through your nose. Just remember not to hold your breath and keep breathing.
Snorkeling offers you a view of the ocean that you can’t imagine from the shore. Colorful coral and schools of fish swim close to you, as interested in you as you are in them. A feeling of calm will overtake you as you look at the wonderful world below. You’ll want to do it again and again.
